We always thought it was really gross when couples save the top of their wedding cake to eat on the first anniversary.(::sobs:: Nothing makes us cry like perfectly good cake wasted.) Well, a couple in Manchester, England were given a can of chicken in a hamper on their wedding day in 1956. Les and Beryl Lailey kept the can of Buxted Chicken in their kitchen cupboard until the couple's 50th wedding anniversary. Les
promised to eat the chicken on their 50th wedding anniversary and eat it he did.(see picture at right) Their love story is very romantic but you don't want to hear about that do you? Now, back to that chicken...he has not reported feeling ill since eating the canned butterball and Prof Eunice Taylor, a food safety expert at the University of Salford, said: "Canned food can last indefinitely if it has been sealed properly, although the normal shelf life is about six months." We wouldn't risk this at home but hey, if you want to lug around a canned chicken for 50 years, like my grand pappy says "We ain't gonna stop ya..now get me some beer."
