Every crazy radio station stunt has its critics. (Hey, even we were against making a giant butter sculpture of Margaret Thatcher...)But the instant wedding staged by a Birmingham radio station enraged a local priest. The contest 'winners' were strangers who agreed to be married after meeting each other earlier in the day. The blind wedding between Craig Cooper and his new wife Rebecca Duffy was promoted as Two Strangers and a Wedding. (The radio station has a great history with instant weddings. A marriage set up seven years ago lasted
a mind boggling 12 weeks!) Mr. Roberts, the official spokesman for Coventry and Warwickshire's Anglican diocese and priest at St. Chad's in Bishops Tachbrook, turned up outside the wedding to protest. He was upset over the immorality of the wedding and was 'incensed' because the stunt was held the day before the start of national marriage week. He wanted to attend the wedding because legally weddings are public affairs and, depending on the vows, he could have had an opportunity to object. Just like on every trashy soap opera ever made. But sadly, he wasn't allowed into the ceremony.(You had to know the bride at least 5 minutes to be invited.)
